It is very funny, that all the responses from the intelligentsia seems to be addressing, advising, persuading, accusing and attacking Anna Hazare who organised a team under the banner 'Civil Society Activists' for their agitation, a gandhian style, non violent, educative, persuasion. Anna Hazare is accused of being arrogant to insist that the Govt do as he dictates. How can a man who resort to hunger fast be termed like that. Hunger fast is a way of harassment of the self and not any body else. Could any of the self proclaimed intelligentsia do that ? A firm will, conviction and commitment to the cause, dedication etc are required to do that. Any amount of intellectual exercise is no match for this method of non-violent struggle. This is a means of persuasion, education and mass communication.
On the contrary, the intelligentsia should have addressed the UPA leaders and the govt how they should address the issues raised by the Anna Hazare team.
One may not be blamed for saying that the support of the intelligentsia to the Govt and the system is because of the privileges enjoyed by the intelligentsia in this system. They do admit that the system is corrupt, draining the public assets to the private corporates and they themselves are occasionally annoyed, but, accommodative when they are faced with instances where they are forced to give bribe. They advise everybody to emulate them, to be passive and amenable to the ills of the society to keep the present system and its frame work.
It is very funny to note that the Prime Minister himself is repeating the arguements put forward by the intelligentsia to save himself and his govt from the wrath of the people. He says, 'Corruption cannot be ended by Lok Pal Bill alone.' He says, it cannot be done over night. According to him Lok Pal bill cannot be passed within the time line, 30th August, set by Anna Hazare.
The great PM was able to sign Nuclear Agreement with US within a day, taking blank cheque from the Parliament with the understanding that Parliament will endorse his action at a later date, which it did, though on bribe (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). LokPal bill is an act of Parliament, any difficiency of which could be amended by it too. If there is a will, there is a way. Or atleast, it could be convincingly put to the agitators.
The question the PM, his advisers and the intelligentsia have to answer is, why was not any action taken to end if not to reduce corruption in the past 65 years of independence ?
Corruption has been on the increase, by leaps and bounds, over the period. Not a single anti-corruption measure is to the credit of Central Govt.
Despite the admonitions from the Apex Court of India, Govt is shameless to keep the Swiss bank depositors list secret.
Why the intelligentsia put forward their stand on these issues raised by the anti-corruption movement. Through such open discussions, the infirmities in anti-corruption movement could be resolved and guided it properly. On the contrary they are making allegations against the anti-corruption movement.
The left and secular opposition has come open with its position made clear with its day observation on 23rd on specific demands that suggests modification to the single item charter of Anna Hazare team.
The Jan Lok Pal bill may be amateur. It may not be suiting the best democratic norms. It may not be comprehensive. It may not be the final answer to the issue of corruption.
But, it is a beginning, which is over due for the last 60 years. It was only the left that has addressed this issue in the past, as early as 5 decades.
BJP, unable to come on its own, is hiding behind the Anna Team with the fond hope that the corrupt and anti-people practices of their governments in the state could be covered.
It is not the left that is jealous of Anna Hazare (as alleged by somebody in this thread), but it is the intelligentsia that is jealous of him.
Let the intelligentsia, if they are so concerned about democracy, peace and tranquillity ask the Govt what to do and how to settle the demands of Anna Hazare and team, instead of accusing the people on the struggle path.

Will the intelligentsia in India address the Govt to persuade it to settle the anti-corruption agitation and to end the hunger fast by Anna Hazare ?
